Listeria Outbreak in US
« on: July 04, 2013, 05:05:03 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just a heads up.  There's been a recall on some cheeses in the US.  Here's a quote from the article:

Minnesota health officials are warning consumers not to consume the Les Freres, Petit Frere and Petit Frere with Truffles cheeses.

Seems there's been 1 death, and 4 illnesses.  These are semi-soft washed rind cheese from Crave Brothers Farmstead.  I've just looked them up, and the cheese sounds like a really good one, so once this recall is sorted it might be worth trying.

Anyway, here's a link to the CNN article.

It will be interesting if we get to know the causal details such as raw milk, pasteurized, poor sanitation, etc.

I think I'll lead the jury and vote for poor handling/sanitation. :-\

Let's ferment something!
Bread, beer, wine, cheese...it's all good.

Hi Boofer,

It's a semi-soft sort of like a cam, so I doubt it is aged long enough to meet the 60 day requirment for raw milk.  That would suggest to me the probability is that it's pasturized, so poor storage perhaps?  Hard to say, and often one never hears the details.
