WTB - Used 7ish gallon s/s milk can/tote
« on: January 24, 2014, 01:49:13 PM »
Back in the game, working with local friends and farmers, wanting to reacquire the convenient stainless steel tote (12-14 half-gallon mason jars won't do).  Hoping to keep it used and fairly cheap, but will pay what is, is.  Since I will be traveling from farm to home, a good seal or latch-down is helpful.  Thanks, guys.

Have you tried eBay and also the used dairy equipment places?  Rikki Carrol's site has classified ads I think.  A friend said they have a lot of good ads up.  Also if there are farmer ad sites you cow,d post your WTB ads perhaps?  I think there are some free ads on some on them.  Good luck!!

Thanks, Tiarella, I have done e-bay, but didn't know Ricki's site had ads, thanks.  Hamby has some scratch and dents, but still a bit more than I was hoping for.  I also know of Hoegger's.  Do you have any other sites, you can recommend?

Cheers!

Paul,  You have ruined my day.  I did a little google and now all I can think of is how much nice equipment is out there.....the prefect stuff for a really nice cheese make room!!!   >:(  all at prices I can't afford!   :'(  But here's some leads for you:

Oh no, cheese equipment here: http://www.schiercompany.com/

You could get 2 5 gallon.....easier to carry and room for expansion.  Not cheap but  nice:

Didn't see anything here but don't cry too much when you see the huge gleaming tanks:

Here's links for small dairy equipment:

This place is good and might have something for you:

Good luck!!!

BobWhite has 10 quart and you could do several.  Bungee cords could hold top on?

5 gallon ones for $189

Although that's more expensive than Caprine Supply I'd recommend finding out where the product is made.  Getting stuff made near a more radioactive area of the world, or in a country with less quality controls could be a curse.  Some cheap stainless steel stuff from certain countries might have lead in the solder.  Good to check out that kind of stuff.

Omigosh, now I have to worry about more stuff! ???

Seriously, these are not the typical concerns one might have had previously, but after the wheat gluten and melamine issues surfaced and probably a majority of goods coming from China, these are genuine causes for concern.

Guess I'll go get in bed and pull the covers over my head. :-\

Let's ferment something!
Bread, beer, wine, cheese...it's all good.

Don't forget to take a flashlight and a good book!

Seriously, I have gotten some "made in India" stainless steel stuff that was cheaply made, unknown solder and not good seams for cleaning properly.  Sometimes a good to be good to be true is just what you want to avoid!    ;)

I've not yet bought one of this thinner-gauge makes from India, but in terms of sanitary welding, I couldn't agree more.  It's bad enough in a brewery, where at least even a bad CIP probably won't get someone sick, but in dairy, well....let's just say I'm particular, even on the geeked home level.

Hey!  Here's an 8 gallon one for $189!!!   This sucker is going to weigh a LOT when full.  Do you have someone to hold the other handle?  http://bobwhitesystems.com/collections/used-equipment/products/8-gallon-milk-tote

I think this might be your answer.  Used, in great condition, polished, only one owner (who drove it only on Sunday's to church I think.)

Really?  You got it?  Cool!!!  They only had one it sounded like although I imagine they see them on a somewhat regular basis.  Now you're ALL set and you'll be cranking out that cheese.  To heavily increase the excitement may I suggest getting an account here www.fromagex.com so you can drool all over your keyboard?  You've probably been to their site already but if not.........sigh.   They are having trouble with their webpages not loading for many people because of how many redirects are involved but maybe that is only the English language versions?   :)

Oh, I wish I was done, Tiarella - now I'm limited by cave space.  I'm seriously thinking of just renting a small space somewhere, I can put in large refrigerators, wine coolers, etc., and convert...between my baking, gypsy swing playing, and return to cheesemaking, our lowly 2 br is busting at the seams!  I'd die to build something like Jos has built, under the sidewalk...on a search...

Plenty of milk, though!  ;D

ps:  Thanks, too, on the Fromagex.  I knew of them but have never played around on their site.  Great.  Another drooler here.  ;D

For a cave, what about finding an insulated shipping container to bury or some other sort of insulated structure and using a coolbot and air conditioner for cooling purposes?  one of my cave dreams is to get a couple of insulated stainless steel shipping containers and some how (definitely magical thinking on this wooded hillside) bury them into the earth for a cheese cave and root cellar.  But you could buy an insulated box truck and retrofit or even a cheap shed and then insulate and line with that plastic wall stuff.  I got my plastic wall stuff from FarmTek  We attached it to the walls and caulked where it meets the concrete floor.  Or maybe like J walker get an insulated shipping container and make half of it the make room.

A lady around here had a cheese dream and outfitted a trailer to code with all the equipment needed and then ran out of money before wiring it and creating septic.  The bank wouldn't loan her anything more so after putting something like $20,000 into it she's had it on the market recently for about $6,000 or something like that.  I think it might be 40' long and towable by semi truck.  Needs a septic hook up....city sewer would be cheapest I guess.  Let me know if you want to find out more about it and I'll search it down.
