No, it is not recommended by the USDA and it is a personal choice.

However, I was basically giving ideas on how to preserve the milk for feeding to pigs.  I did not mean to be hugely controversial here.

I use my cheesemaking kettle - holds 6 gallons of milk/water and is plenty tall enough for the 1/2 gallon jars.  I put the rack from my regular canner in the bottom of it to prevent the jars from breaking.

HKJ there is not enough head space with that canner for 1/2 gallons. You do it but I would feel better having more space on top just to be sure.

I have searched, that is why I asked. I have found most large stock pots seem big enough but do not actually give the space required to safely can. I suppose i could spend a fortune but though if someone had found one it would be good.

I have been looking for a larger pot/vat for my cheese making, I know you can spend one helluvuh lot of cash.
amazon has a heck of lot of larger pots some very spendy but I have found some very reasonable.
here's what I mean  :) if you look in the left hand column you can check out even larger Stockpot Capacity's,
as you say that is when they become very expensive. :(
