Hello from Madison, Wisconsin
« on: April 28, 2009, 01:51:29 AM »
I made my first cheese on Saturday, and now I'm hooked. I moved to Wisconsin about 2 years ago, and now my friends are joshing me about having gone for the "Wisconsin Extra Credit."

My interests are mostly curiosity about process and basic home-steading activites. I always want to know how stuff works!

Welcome to the forum. You are lucky enough to live in the cheese capital of the US.

Yeah, that may be Wayne, but we Californians have Happy Cows.

Oh, and welcome.

Happy cows you say?...  They must be grazing on some legal medicinal weeds out there in the pasture.

Welcome from a fellow Wisconsinite!  I moved here from Minnesota, but it took about 17 years for me to start making cheese.  I live in an old cheese factory, so it was kind of a natural progression in my life, I guess.  I'm a homesteader, too, so we'll probably have more things in common.

Yeah, I've seen some of those Happy California Cows!  In the LA area, at least, they gotta be eating something that had to be legalized, because they were all living in dry lots.  Nothing like the ad men put out.  You do have cute commercials, though!

I'm curious about homesteading activities, but in actuality, I'm probably a horrible homesteader. (I work with computers for a living, and am entirely too technology addicted to ever go off the grid like my mother keeps threatening to do...) That aside, I seem to have an affinity for fussy process oriented activities like soaping, dye/spin/weave/knit/sew-ing, and I really enjoy keeping busy. My biggest problem is that my day job keeps me from getting anything DONE.  >:( I don't consider myself to be an artisan-anything. I'm more a jack-of-all-trades type person. I will be entirely satisfied with my cheesy-experiences if I can consistently produce a decent cheddar.

I considered myself to be a homesteader from the time I was a kid, even though I lived in town.  Didn't get out in the country until I was 35, but spent my town years learning many of the skills that serve me well now.

I don't ever plan on going off-grid.  I'm not that hardcore.  Getting too old for that, IMHO.  Having our sewer lines frozen up this winter and using a 5-gallon pail as a toilet was bad enough!

I make soap and have just learned how to spin wool into bulky yarn (think character here) that I want to use in basketweaving to give them some interest.  I'm fortunate enough to only have to work part-time - in other words, we're willing to give up some conveniences and toys in order to have more time together.

Keep on postin' on your cheese quest.  It's really fun to read about how different people use different techniques (more or less) and all get something that makes them happy.

I to work on computers for a living and will prolly never go completely off-grid.
But if the grid itself goes offline, i think i will do better than some.

This thread and others like it here in the forums remind me of the Hank Williams jr song
"a country boy can  survive."

The preacher man says it’s the end of time
And the Mississippi River she’s a goin’ dry
The interest is up and the Stock Markets down
And you only get mugged
If you go down town

I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain’t too many things these ole boys can’t do
We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Because you can’t starve us out
And you cant makes us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We came from the West Virginia coalmines
And the Rocky Mountains and the and the western skies
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I’d send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Cause you can’t starve us out and you can’t make us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We’re from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Welcome Jessie. Nothing as good as Wisconsin cheese! I have family there. Appleton, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point and Nekoosa. Great farm country but brutal winters!

Welcome Jesse.  As Wayne illuded to we are just a bunch of good ol' boys!   Thanks for posting those lyrics Wayne!  Brings back a lot of good memories. My brothers and parents listen to country music a lot more than I do, but thats is certainly one I do love.

Well, I'm a weird little half-asian goth chick, but as proven by NCIS, goths have no problems getting along with good ole boys. Which of you gets to be Gibbs?

Actually, having ordered black wax for my little cheeses, I'm thinking they too will be goth.

I mean, think about it. All those little de-pressed Monterey Jacks and Cheddars painted black and hanging out in my dank basement trying to be cool...

Badump bump! Thanks... I'll be here all week...

I'd go for the Giibs role, but I guess I blew that when I decided to wax my cheese in black as well.
