Where can I buy Holdbac in Australia?
« on: August 14, 2017, 07:13:53 PM »
Does anyone know if you can purchase it here?
The local Homebrew supplies don't stock it and I have googled it but the search came up a blank for local suppliers.

(Actually I didn't google it, I used DuckDuckGo.)

I would call cheeselinks as a starting point and ask them. I think that there are two other commercial culture suppliers in Australia. A quick google ( or DuckDuckGo)should turn them up, give them a call as well.

I imagine it is something that would be on an industry catalogue, that home cheese makers don't normally have access to without asking.

Good  luck.

Thanks Mathew,

I will contact them and see what is available.

My main reason for asking is that it has been shown to be a powerful probiotic eg - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-08-17/new-peanut-allergy-treatment-longlasting-study-says/8814264 and would love to add it to my yoghurt cultures.

The Wiki pages also show a lot of other benefits. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobacillus_rhamnosus

It's ability to stop a lot of very nasty bacteria is astounding! Including H. Pylorii. etc. Which is why it is used in cheesemaking.

Let me know how you go, given my wife has a peanut allergy and we don't know if my son does yet this may be worth investigating further for us.

There are several cultures that cannot be imported into Australia.  That may be one of them.  Check with the Australian customs website.  They have a list.

Shall do. Thanks.

I found one source. A tad expensive though.  https://www.mrvitamins.com.au/ethical-nutrients-eczema-shield-100g

The Cheesemaker ships to Australia.  http://www.thecheesemaker.com/products/Holdbac-Starter-Culture-LC.html

A quick google found this yogurt brand in Australia http://vaalia.com.au/benefits

You could always buy this and use it as a starter for a mother culture

I haven't contacted them yet, their website is fairly vague as to what is in each package. I definitely will have a look at the Vaalia yoghurts, thanks.

I have been on a course of anti-biotics for an upper respiratory infection (cold/flu whatever) and I found these at the chemist.
