I add whey to my saurkraut and kimchi for pickling. Works well with most veggies. I bought the book to see if she does it like I do.

Whey sauerkraut sounds interesting! How much whey and when? I haven't added any liquid to my sauerkraut. Should make a new batch soon, could try some whey there. Since there's plenty of the stuff.

I am guessing you make kraut from plain salted cabbage.

Making it like this then add about 2 cups of whey to a gallon of kraut. It will get it going faster.

My whey goes to the pigs and chickens.  Both groups really like it and all but climb over the top of each other to get it. I also use it when I make bread. You can substitute whey for water just about anytime.

I use the leftover whey to add to my local sewer bill.

I add a lot more whey to the sewer than anything I'm afraid. I just have more whey than places to used it.

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread.  This thread alone is worth the cost of joining the board!  ;D

No, really, I'm glad.  I've been trying to find more uses for whey.  I've got some great ideas from this thread.

I used a little whey in my sauerkraut, but it doesn't take a lot for that.  Some of the other suggestions here will be very helpful.

I used whey to cook my pinto beans this week, and that worked great.  very delicious.   Also used it to cook my brown rice.

whey to water plants?  I may try that... i don't know... house plants?  maybe it would smell?

I guess I will have to get a copy of the Nourishing Traditions book.  I used a kraut recipe based on a recipe from that book already.

Zoey's post about whey and fruit juice gave me an idea... so I looked and the Internet and  I found a document that gives me some ideas to try --  http://www.p2pays.org/ref/12/11458.pdf

using whey to make wine!?  Oh boy...  some experimenting will begin!

"I use the leftover whey to add to my local sewer bill."  Wayne.     LOL
