Cutting Cheese - Cheese Wires

From US based CulinaryCookware I ordered a pack of 10 French Matfer Bourgeat brand Wire Cheese Or Butter Cutters.

I ordered the shorter 300 mm/11-7/8" ones for 10 for USD10.20 plus shipping rather than the only other choice was an extra long 800 mm/31.5" for USD13.59 plus shipping.

I have no long thin knife to cut my wheels so up to now use a thick knife which sticks to the cheese and thus I have to push hard to cut them.

And for member Carter, no I didn't get a free pen with my order :D.

Baby Chee, you are welcome, simple tool but the cheapest I'd found online in US was @ USD5 + 5 shipping for one! So 10 for USD10 was a no-brainer.

Plus it was only an add on as I ordered a Salometer, long spatula as a Curd Knife, and long skimmer type ladle from the same webstore.

I was wondering about making those myself. How thick is the wire in your cutters? I assume it's stainless steel?

I was thinking stainless steel fishing wire or guitar strings on a wooden dowel.

A nice exercise in wood turning, I'm thinking. I would have some scrap rosewood that could be used for this...

Thanks for the tip, John. I will be looking into that myself. I've been using a metal pizza cutter. Those might make cutting blocks of wax easier too, without my having to buy a plug-in heated wax cutter.

Riha, the website doesn't say but I assume they are stainless steel as otherwise in humid climate here in Houston they would rust quite quickly. Nope haven't used yet, soon ;). I don't have a tool for measuring how thick the wire is. So here's a picture of a flex test. From above picture you can see wire is already partly bent, handles are solid plastic but small and total wire length is 300 mm/11-7/8". Hope it gives you a feel for the wire's thickness/strength, they are thin but not that thin like you get on some fine fishing line. I couldn't see reeling this onto a fishing reel.

I'd have never found them in that webstore if after choosing my other items I hadn't had a quick search on that website on word "cheese".

I wonder how the Stainless Steel wire i used for my curd knife would do in this capacity...

I have a roll of fishing wire I still haven't gotten around to using! I wonder how that'd work if it were tied to a hack saw? Maybe a nice chrome one?
