New to retailing
« on: August 29, 2010, 01:44:50 PM »
Greetings fellow cheese lovers.  I am soon to be opening my own small cheese retail shop in S. Florida.  I was wondering how to go about finding a list of wholesale suppliers both for domestic and international cheese makers.  I'm sure a list must exist somewhere.....doesnt it?

Suzie-I'm doing similar research. Not as centralized as you would hope.

If you haven't already, subscribe to Culture magazine. A number of the larger distributors advertize there.
Strike up a conversation with area restaurants- they'll have source info for you too.

One of the biggies is DCI: http://www.dcicheeseco.com/?id=28147031669

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Try the NASFT - they have every specialty food brand and distributor on the planet.  They organize the Fancy Food show, where thousands of these distributors come and try to get new business twice a year.  This is where you will find all of them, get samples and sign up business.  You will also be able to get a lot of other things from olives to caviar to jams, crackers and confitures, even cheese slicing equipment, dishes and trays for sale to your customers. You can get Culture Magazine and Cheese Connoisseur magazine carried in your shop, stock up on custom cheese boxes, even get specialty Formaticon cheese wrapping paper with your store logo on it.

I was at the last show in NYC this summer. The next one is the winter show which is smaller but still huge. It takes place in San Francisco in January.  You don't need to do anything else than going to one of these shows to get everything you need for your shop.

Here is a thread I posted about the cheese I found at the summer show. This will give you a good idea (TONS OF PHOTOS!):

And here is their official site:

The two distributes I would start with would be Atlanta Foods and The Cellars at Jasper Hill.  I can also connect you with my contact at Murray's if you want to discuss reselling/distribution with them. Please message me directly for that.

Sheri,

I've seen the Guild site before, but the info seems really old.
