The start of my making cheese.

Right now, I am grinning from ear to ear and super excited.  I just went and bought me a milk cow.  I'm ready to start milking and eventually making my cheeses.  She's a jersey, and I am going to put pics up as soon as I get home. :)

Her name is Allie, and I will be going to get another one just like her from the same man in a couple of weeks.

Moo Hoo!  She's a doll.  Is she bred? How long 'till milk?

There is another really active forum called "Keeping a Family Milk Cow" and a book by the same name by the person who began the forum.   The book is very practical and the forum is full of terrific, friendly folks, and you can ask any question about keeping a cow and get an answer or find it in the archives.

Allie is beautiful!  I'm guessing that she's a bred heifer, as I don't see much udder on her.  When is she due to freshen?

She's bred back to a jersey, and she should have a calf around Feb./Mar.  This will be her first.  Thanks for the info on the Family Cow Forum.  I'm gonna check it out.

Very nice.  Is the other one you are buying already in milk or will you be waiting for a calf from her, too?

Do you have experience with milking cows?  I started out with a heifer and had never milked before - we had quite a rodeo the first week of milking, but I would never go back and do it differently.

The other one is not in milk yet either, but she is not a heifer.  I'm by no means an expert at milking, but I use to help my dad when he was doing it.

Well, then you are ahead of where I started out.  Some days I think I want two cows, then others I am glad to have a break once a year from the milking...but then I really hate being without fresh milk, too.  I think I'd go for a second one if I had a relief milker, but I'm the only one.
