Our Daughter #1 likes homemade yogurt, batch #2 made yesterday half gone, thus need to start next batch using new Salton Brand Model YM-9 Electric Yogurt Making Machine and standard yogurt recipe but without pre-cooking milk as using already pasteurized milk:

RECORDS
  • Dec 31, 2008, 11:20AM: Plugged in machine to pre-heat. Poured 2 fluid ounces of nonfat cow's milk powder as thickener into clear plastic 1 quart/1 litre washed used soup container from Chinese take out restaurant, added 1/2 cup Dannon unflavoured plain active yogurt, filled with store bought 1% pasteurized homogenized cow's milk from jug to 1 litre total. Stirred with spoon to dissolve milk powder and distribute yogurt, placed in wall type microwave.
  • Dec 31, 2008, 11:25AM: Zapped for 2 minutes, stirred with thermometer and measured 107 F/42 C, perfect. Placed container in machine, put lid tightly on container, placed cover on machine, set dial to 11 as reminder when made yogurt and left to bake.
  • Dec 31, 2008, 7:30PM: Tested consistency of yogurt after baking for 8 hours, OK, put lid back tightly on container and placed in fridge to rest, pulled plug on machine.
  • Jan 1, 2009, 8:30AM: Checked consistency of product after overnight in fridge, almost, ie 90% as thick as when pre-cooked milk in previous batch.

NOTES
  • Next time, try same method without tight sealing lid to see if make any difference.
