Cheese factory to cheese school?
« on: February 07, 2011, 04:19:52 PM »
I've been holding my cheesemaking classes at the local community center, but it is really only available to me about once a month or less, depending on how active the community is.  I'd really like to offer the class more often, but have had some difficulty in finding a location to do so.

Then it dawned on me - our home is an old cheese factory that has a huge room that would make a great place to hold classes.

I'm starting the search to find the info I need to be legal about this.  Maybe in a year or so the cheese school will be taking off!

Wow, would love to see photos.  I don't think this is a problem for teaching cheesemaking. It's a problem only if you sell cheese commercially.

If you are correct, Fly, then I could be up and running as early as this summer.  I will do my research first, though.

As long as you are not selling the cheese, you will be legal and are NOT required to have a commercial kitchen.

Does it change the "laws" if you charge a price for the class?  I think that may be the case in my state.  Mrs.KK - could you update us on what you find out officially about that?  Also, just wanted to say that I read, and enjoyed, the article about you from the link here on the forum!

Yes, I will let you know what I find out.  I really haven't done much investigation on this yet, though.

Have you tried contacting your local UW extension office? They might know.

It's still all in the what-if stage.  Mostly waiting for the current spate of cheese classes to be over so that I have the time, attention, and energy to focus on other things.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.
