On May 20, a 6.0 earthquake destroyed over 400,000 wheels of cheese in the Parmesan producing areas of Northern Italy.

On May 26, a second quake of 5.8 hit just 36 miles east of Parma (the center of the universe for Parmesan). At least 17 people were killed in the second quake.

Second Quake

I was in this area of Italy last Summer. Really sad.

One of my big cheese buyers tells me that they are expecting a shortage of real Italian Parmesan and that the price may go up by 50% or more.

That is so sad, not just the loss of the cheese, or  the devastation of the old buildings, mainly the loss of life and family.

Hubs and I were in Venice on the 23-25 and never heard a word until we got back to Austria on the evening of the 25th. Venice just had a tornado a few days ago too. Crazy weather that rarely gets reported here in the States. Very sad happenings.

Some of those wheels look salvageable.
I suppose many were, and more were not.

Something tells me a lot of people were eating free parm in the area.

I would think they would find a gray market for some of that.

Let's ferment something!
Bread, beer, wine, cheese...it's all good.
