Title: Home made ash caution
Post by: Dinerdish on February 06, 2011, 02:01:16 PM
This is just a heads up, but I was reading an old post about Humbolt Fog recipes and Velward mentioned making ash out of black walnut. This may not be the best choice of wood because handling the freshly cut lumber, breathing the dust or the smoke from burning it,  can cause significant allergic reaction in some woodworkers. So I would be cautious about about eating it.

Dinerdish, thanks for the warning.

There's a US Material Safety Data Sheet (http://www.buyactivatedcharcoal.com/activated_carbon_msds) on the website of that US based provider for activated carbon.

It doesn't mention allergies but it does say "The primary concerns for occupational exposure are skin contact and inhalation in the form of dust. The dust may cause eye irritation, slight skin irritation, and possible respiratory tract irritation that can cause coughing or sneezing".
