Title: Mozz Stretching Fun
Post by: Sailor Con Queso on September 07, 2011, 03:25:29 AM
I held a Mozz stretching event at our Lexington, Kentucky Farmer's Market over Labor Day weekend. What a blast. Kids of all ages got to give it a try. The youngest was 3. The oldest was 87 in a wheelchair. They were lined up all afternoon waiting for their turn. The winner of the distance stretching contest was a little over 10 feet. I don't know who had more fun, me or the "kids".

As they say, a picture is worth 1000 words. Enjoy.

Although my elders said "do not play with your cheese son" it looks like fun.  ;D

Wow, Sailor, great idea for the farmers market.  What kind of gear did you take to, ahem, "pull" that off?

The Fire Marshal would not have allowed a normal hot plate so my induction cooker came in very handy. There's no direct heat or fire potential so he couldn't turn it down. Stainless bowl to heat water. Stainless colander lined with Plyban to prevent sticking. 2 pounds of Mozz. One was heating while we stretched the other. Used the same Mozz over and over all day. I kept the water at just 140F so nobody had to use gloves. For the really little kids I worked the Mozz until it cooled off enough for their tender hands. And LOTS of paper towels.

Sailor, I'm so envious that even in that environment your mozz stretches and stretches :o.  Maybe a jump rope contest with those big stretched out ones is your next big moment!  It looked like a good time was had by all ;).

I'm sure that there were a few future cheese makers inspired by you, Sailor.

Great public relations and, no doubt, good marketing for your business.

Have a cheese.

That's really awesome, Sailor!  I was asked to demonstrate cheesemaking at a local fair last month.  I stretched mozz throughout the day, so people could see how it was done, but I wasn't sure how to do it so that people could get some hands-on experience.

May I steal your idea for next summer?

Absolutely Karen. The induction cooker was really the key. The kids really got into the distance things and it really drew large crowds.

I think I will e-mail a link to this thread to the organizers of the Summer Happening.  They had ice cream in a bag and buttermaking for the kids this summer - it would be fun to add mozz stretching next year.
