Title: Cheese Salt - Buying In Bulk
Post by: Lancel on September 24, 2012, 03:38:54 PM
Hi folks,

I'm new to this board and cheesemaking. Can anyone tell me where I could purchase cheese salt in bulk? I can only find them in 8 oz bags.

Your local swimming pool supply will have bulk salt. Read the label to be sure there is nothing but NaCl in the mix. I get 25 pounds for about $12 or so.

Thanks so much. Is bulk the salt the same as cheese salt?

Pickling salt is also pure NaCl, about $1.69 for 4 pounds at the grocery store.

Yes, cheese salt is pure salt.  Iodine and anti-caking agents cause problems with cheese development.

Cheese salt tends to dissolve a bit more easily than canning salt.  I use kosher salt in cheese making and it works very well.  If I run out, though, I resort to canning salt, which I always have plenty of.
