Title: My brief cheese poem
Post by: JeffHamm on October 19, 2013, 10:45:13 PM
making cheese

oh swirling curds of chaos such delights
you promise to deliver us in time
though now no more than jelly oh so white
some day you will be smooth and so sublime
but nows the time to set and become firm
and nows the time to drain away they whey
and nows the time to press and take the weight
for only through these efforts can we learn
if everything we do upon this day
was by our choice or simply milking fate

- Had a bit of time during the making of my 4th Staffordshire cheese to pen this little "ode to cheesemaking".

Wow, Keatsian ode form. Lovely. How about Pindaric?

Ode to cheese microbes

prepare the vat, the blade, let fires burn
Trap sunshine in the liquid form
Add in the creatures, make them yearn
Until they warm.
And drunk with sweetness lose all care, concern.
What guard might warn them of their future death?
Of frigid homes and loving hands,
The distant lands
Where flavor builds with every final breath.

A cheese to each of you for your poems! I am afraid I lack such creativity, but I sure do appreciate yours!

Hi scasnerkay.  The only way to lack my creativity is to have talent! ;)  I'm impressed that Pav was able to spot and name the ode format!  Is there anything you don't know, Pav?

The only thing I remember about my poetry and prose course in college was the fact that the english Professor didn't know that Simon & Garfunkel put Simonson's "Richard Cory" to music.  LOL

"He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch,
And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much,
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read:
"Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head."

The new day dawns , and with it brings
The morning dew upon the grass ,
As I awake , a robin sings
A cloud slips by , like a fairy lass.
The sun climbs high , as if to speak
Of a shepherds life , in the alpine lands
His rays boil over the mountain peak
And onto the hearth where the cauldron stands.

A cup of tea , a breakfast proper
I leave my dreams of the previous night ,
And on to the kettle of gleaming copper
Where ‘neath it burns a fire bright.
The kettle full , both warm and deep
With liquid love ‘tis stirred by hand ,
This selfless offering from my sheep
Would warm the heart of any man.

Paitiently coaxing the tender curd
With experienced hands and easy mind ,
I render the gift of the alpine herd
Into wheels of gold , no better you’ll find.
The days work done , the copper bright
Wheels of gold upon the shelf ,
The herd is settling for the night ,
Now I be off to rest myself.

Off to sleep on a peaceful breeze ,
Lying alone in the mountain night ,
Such are the memories of my cheese
And they live on in every bite.

I did not write this, just happened to see it today.... Better if you sing it....

Sweet dreams are made of cheese...
who am I to diss a Brie,
I Cheddar the world and Feta cheese.
Everybody's looking for Stilton...

I love these  ;D

There is, believe it or not, a cheese poetry website! If you fancy a peek, there is a link to it on the HomemadeCheese.org resources page (http://www.homemadecheese.org/cheese-making-resources.html)

Enjoy!

Found this online...

My mouse is rather fond of cheese
from hereabouts or overseas
like cheddars, parmesans and bries
in brick or wheel or ball.

He'll eat ricotta, feta too,
plus gorgonzola, gouda, blue,
in sandwiches or cheese fondue,
my mouse will eat them all.

He'll have havarti for a snack,
a slice or two, and then a stack
of mozarella, Swiss and jack,
he thinks they're oh so nice.

But though my mouse and I agree
we both enjoy a tasty brie,
I'll miss my mouse because, you see,
my cat is fond of mice.

Coming late to this thread, but I'll just add one of my own cheese poems (I have three cheese poems so far). Rikki Carroll's cheesemaking blog (cheesemakinghelp.blogspot.com) was kind enough to publish it some years back:

The inspiration for this poem was the news that, apparently, in 2011, cheese was the most stolen food item in the world.

A case of hit and rennet

Who filched the fetta
Creamed the cream cheese from the shelf,
Who's on the lam with Edam,
Added parma to their pelf?

Who wangled all the Singles,
Put their finger in the Swiss,
Took a motza Mozzarella
Ere we knew what was amiss?

Who touched the Dutch,
Took the camemberts and bries,
Lock, stock and bocconcini
Without so much as please?

There's a lack amongst the lactose
Now the Gorgonzola's gone,
Some rotter took Ricotta
And the Philly's all forlorn -

Who took the cheese?
What could have caused this crime?
Can we put it down to culture,
Or was it just - enzyme?
