Title: Review - Netherlands Landana Brand 1000 Days Aged Gouda

Went to a brand new mega US Kroger chain grocery store near us here in Houston 2 days ago. Naturally walked past the cheese area, and a presentation saying 1000 days aged cheese naturally caught my eye ;D!

What was even better was when I turned around there was a fresh free samples container. I will admit I made 3 circles past it and must of eaten 15 cubes with 15 different toothpicks before stopping ::)!

In summary, wonderful:

• Very hard but not grating hard.
• Very very tasty Gouda cheese like Rembrandt brand, except with more zing.
• probably the oldest age cheese I have ever eaten!

Little internet research:

• The wheel had no brand name, Tage is German, Dagen is Dutch and Jours is French for English Days.
• The small sign above the sample container said Landana Brand, which is made by Vandersterre Group (http://www.sterkaas.nl/index.php?taal=4) in the Netherlands.
• Their website says they make a Gouda aged 10 months but doesn't mention their 1000 day version.
• Wheel wrapping was different almost plastic paper like, found another picture here (http://www.globalpackagegallery.com/main.php/v/food/dairy/cheese/LANDANA_KAZEN_vp0207.jpg.html).Don't know exactly what it is.

Luckily had camera so took some pictures . . .

That almost looks like a parmesan.  Thanks for the pic CH.

Oh, did you think that it was worth aging for 1000 days?

Definately, but of course I would never manage that as I'd eat well before ;D.

It looks extremely dry for a gouda. Of course something our size would be that dry in half that time.

I bought a tiny slice of a 4 year old gouda yesterday.  It's absolutely AMAZING!  The flavor is complex: nutty, salty, fruity.  It's like fine wine.  I've been desartely trying to find the company name on my slice, but no luck.

One of the reasons I always split my cheese batch into two cheeses is for aging. One I can eat now and the other I can age to perfection. Nice to compare as well.

Tropit, I haven't heard of that one. Another very popular aged Gouda is Rembrandt brand, if you search this forum on Rembrandt you should get a few hits and a couple pictures.

I have a Best Cheese Corp out of New York - Vintage Aged Gouda that was 3 years old when I bought it... It came from Sam's Warehouse in a huge wheel.

Still have a little left and is probably knocking on 5 years old now. Very dry, very hard, very tasty.
