I am going to be making some Fromage blanc and the recipe calls for the use of butter muslin. Can I use a double layer of standard cheese cloth or would it be better to wait until I can get the butter muslin?

Standard cheese cloth has too loose of a weave, you will loose curd. Get the cheapest/thinest muslin from anywhere fabric is sold.

I often use plain linen dishcloths from walmart or large cotten hankerchiefs.

Ahhh, those WalMart dishcloths. I have to look into those next time I am in town.
JoAnn fabrics sells muslin cloth. It's about $9 for 36" by 108". That's a lot of muslin in terms of cheese making. Pity they don't sell yards of cheesecloth.

I posted a picture somewhere of the WalMart dish cloths. They call them flour sacks. Just wash them good and give them a boil. Who knows where they've been.

Ah! I just went over to the local upholsterer's house and was talking... he cut down his 60 count cheesecloth curtains in a room he was redoing as we spoke and handed them to me.
I've now got about 20 yards or more of 60 count cheesecloth; I just have to wash it and sanitize. Cheese cloth for a looong time. @_@; He has more to come down and he said he'll drop it on me when he gets them off the rods.

Good deal!
