I am working to be a self-sustaining farmer.  Cheese making is a next step.  I have been waiting so desperately for the cow but I am impatient.  Going to jump right in.  I am on 4 acres in Western Maine.  I home process alot of what we eat... I can't wait to have a cheese cave.

Welcome to the cheese forum Birdi.  You will find a lot of information here and a lot of help.

There are existing threads here that outline beginner approaches to equipement, recipes and basic cheesemaking processes.

Feel free to post your cheese questions and by all means let us know what you try and how it works out for you.  Pictures are always a plus.

Welcome Birdi in Maine, USA!

I think you are our first member from Maine so I just added a Geographic > USA > Maine Board in case you have any local stuff you want to post.

FYI, there is a Cheese Recommendations for those new to cheese making here, good luck and have fun!

Hello Birdi from Maine.

Welcome to the cheese forum.  Lots of good people and info here.

Good luck on your quest to be self-sustaining.  I admire you greatly...  You will find cheese-making both rewarding and challenging at the same time.  Please let us know about your beginning experiences.

Good morning Birdi and welcome to the forum.  Wat cheese are you hoping to make first?

How many cows are you going to get, just one? They are a lot of work.

Welcome to CFO, Birdie!  To the world of cow ownership (when is that supposed to happen?) and to cheesemaking.

I have a cow and they aren't too much work, IMHO.  Or maybe I should say that it is the kind of work I enjoy, so it doesn't seem like work.  My favorite vacation is spent right here on the farm, pretending to be a full-time farmer.

I look forward to getting to know you better.
