So I was playing around with different flavors (and colors) just to see what would happen. I made the Bel Paese recipe from 200 Easy Homemade Cheeses. Since its a fairly bland cheese I added dried lavender flowers for a more aromatic and flavorful cheese. Due to other threads I've read, trying to get the true essence of lavender is difficult, so I went a little overboard when adding. And I figured while I'm at it, make it look like it smells so I added neon purple food coloring. I was finally brave enough to taste it. It was a tad too salty for my taste. It smelled as lavender as it looked. It didn't taste bad but the chewyness of the herbs clashed with the soft rubbery texture of the cheese so it was too weird for me.  :P I probably won't be eating much more. But it was fun while it lasted.

That is most definitely the first purple cheese I have ever seen! :D

To paraphrase Ogden Nash:

I've never seen a purple cheese.
I never hope to see one.
But if there is a purple cheese,
I'd rather see than be one.

LOL A friend's daughter loves everything purple (she is often seen wearing multiple shades of purple clothing!), she would probably take a bite of that.  :D

When I was about 7, I went to live with my Dad and Step-mother. She introduced me to food coloring, which I had never seen... soon after, I snuck into the kitchen and saturated a piece of white bread with straight blue food coloring. To this day I cannt eat off-colored foods.  :)

Good luck on the purple cow-cheese!

Someone had to do this. Turns out you are that person. Thanks for "going there"!

LOL, you guys all cracked me up. Thanks for the responses. I thought this one might have some "shock and awe" factor.  ;D

As awesome as that cheese is... I still think it needs MORE COWBELL!

Wow, that's definitely different!!  ;D

That is one purple cheese!  With what you learned about colouring the cheese, though, you could apply to something like Sage Derby.

Jeff, ding ding ding! That's why I bought the food coloring to begin with, for my sage derby. I realized the sage water was weak so i added two different greens to get the target color I wanted. I've read that it's usually chlorophyll but I couldn't find any that wasn't in pill form or flavored with mint (health food stores).

Besides, what the hell else would I ever need purple for?  >:D

I hope that you saved some for Halloween. The kids will love it...

Way cool.  8)  Wow, Smurf cheese...or is it Barney the Dinosaur cheese?

The time you step into the Twilight Zone to make your cheese, perhaps you'd just make a lavendar tea and then dump the weeds. You should then have the essence and the fine purple cheese texture.

Let's ferment something!
Bread, beer, wine, cheese...it's all good.
