Title: Where is a good place to get keifer grains?
Post by: yngfarm on May 06, 2009, 01:29:05 PM
I am wondering where a good place to get keifer grains is at?  I really don't want to order from Australia if there is a source in USA.

I would post on craigslist for a local source you can pick up.

Also check out http://www.rejoiceinlife.com/kefir/kefirlistUSA.php (http://www.rejoiceinlife.com/kefir/kefirlistUSA.php) and the yahoo kefir group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kefir_making/ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Kefir_making/)

If you have a farmer's market or some other place where you can find a congregation of local folks interested in healthy meat and milk, chances are you can find someone, or find someone who knows someone. And anyone who has kefir grains will probably have some to spare -- just like sourdough, they tend to grow faster than they can be dealt with, if you don't exercise a firm hand.

I've found folks via a local yahoo group, and I believe through the Kefir_Making yahoo group (or possibly Real_Kefir_Making (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Real_Kefir_Making/)... I don't recall which was more popular at that point).

If all else fails, you can buy them in the US from GEM Cultures (http://www.gemcultures.com/dairy_cultures.htm). Never bought kefir grains from them, but I had good luck with their tempeh starter, and they were quite friendly.

Also, I posted these videos of making Kefir (https://cheeseforum.org/forum/index.php/topic,1180.0.html).

And these videos on Kefir Grains (https://cheeseforum.org/forum/index.php/topic,1181.0.html) that were harvested by YouTube from his website. The guy is a bit OTT, but at end of which I think the he says that he sells them in US and gives his address.

This is another listing of folks with kefir grains to share or sell.  http://www.torontoadvisors.com/Kefir/kefir-list.php (http://www.torontoadvisors.com/Kefir/kefir-list.php)

It is subdivided by country, then city, so for the US contributors, you have to page down through it...for instance, Lincoln, NE is listed ahead of Los Angeles, CA because it is listed alphabetically by city, rather than by state.  A little tedious, but it can get you there.  Plus, you could find people in your area that way, too.

If you can't find kefir grains locally, these folks have provided me with a consistently good product:
