Title: Orange Balls (mould...?) On cheese
Post by: Lauralovescheese on July 22, 2015, 07:29:01 PM
I am a cheesemonger,  just came across these tiny orange balls on one of our cheeses. Although it's not supposed to, it has extensive bluing, these showed up with it in the last couple days. My case had a wee flood so there's the possibility it gained extra moisture. I have tried to find out what this is, any ideas? I have pulled the cheese from the case until I find out. Thanks!!

That does not look good :o!  I'm not a cheese monger (could only wish) but those pictures look like a cheese in distress.  It may be your "wee flood" brought in some nasties with it and the high RH only encouraged them.

Looks like slime mold http://allofnature.blogspot.com/2012/06/yellow-slime-mold-that-isnt.html?sa=X&ved=0CB4Q9QEwBGoVChMIsaHiuYjwxgIVUDOICh2JNApI. However, wouldn't really want to eat it  :o.

I would file that in the large round metal cabinet or the compost heap...  :-\
