Title: Maturing cheese in unheated garage, help!
Post by: Menumaster on April 07, 2019, 03:51:41 PM
Hi everyone....I've been making cheese for a while in New York however I've recently relocated to lovely Ireland and herein lies my problem.  My new house has absolutely no space for a fridge that I can use to mature my cheeses.  I have a garage which is big enough however it isn't heated.  Would you all agree that my only options are to a)-heat the garage above 55F (13c) or b) build a heated box for the fridge to sit in?  Or, is there a commercial (or other) solution that would work in my unheated garage, price, isn't necessarily too much of an issue (he says slightly tempting fate!)...thanks in advance for your help

Insulate the garage.
It will act like a cave, the ground temperature will moderate internal air temperature.
If you store a lot of cheese, thermal mass will assist if it is stored in a fridge or similar.
If you stop it from dropping below freezing and rising above 20c, you will be OK.

a lot of homebrewers will install a lightbulb into an empty paint can (i've heard some people paint the inside black) and connect it to the hot side of a dual stage temp controller

It's hard to buy lightbulbs any more :-)  What you really want is a machine for mining bitcoinz.  Get rich quick!  >:D

Interestingly back when Bitcoin was first developed I was living in a literal shack by the ocean in rural Japan.  I had no heater, so I literally did heat my house by mining bitcoins.  I still have them on an old machine somewhere.  They are worth a lot of money even now, but I can't bring myself to sell them because with their near zero utility, they are simply a scam for anyone who buys them...  I'm too nice a guy :-)
