Title: Greetings from the California Motherlode
Post by: kimlasavio on September 14, 2010, 07:32:00 PM
 8)  I am happy to find this forum.  I have Nubian goats and have been making cheese for about six months.  So far:  Chevre, fromage blanc, fromagina (all about the same in my estimation), dry curds (cottage cheese), two cheddars, and today I started a Caerphilly.  I am REALLY looking forward to finding answers to my questions from you guys!  Best wishes,

Hi Kim, welcome, many members here have goats (not me), what is the reference to Motherlode, Gold (which made a new high today)?

Hi there,
The western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, bordering the Central Valley on the east, was once the site of the famous California Gold Rush, and the foothill areas where the most gold was found is still referred to as the Motherlode.   We are southeast of Sacramento in a rural area that boasts many lakes and outdoor activities as well as great weather for raising livestock.  We have horses, goats, chickens, and ducks on our little farm.  My husband has been adding for years to our outbuildings and I am happy to say that I finally have a separate milking parlour - nothing luxurious, but at least I have an enclosed place with four walls, a roof, and a concrete floor where I can milk in peace and keep things relatively clean.  I dream of a fine and fancy creamery operation someday, but for now I am very happy with my few goats, my milking room, a nice kitchen to work in and a little refrigerator on the back patio where I can age my cheeses.   ^-^

Thanks Kim, I never knew that about the Motherlode.

From suburbia I envy your farm!
