Title: Hi from Melbourne Victoia Australia
Post by: Bishop on October 31, 2010, 08:29:29 AM
Hi everyone, my names Bishop and I currently reside in Melbourne Australia.  I've been making cheese for a few months now experimenting with Camembert, I now hope with the help of the Cheese Guru's on this site to move onto some washed rinds and Swiss styles.

It's nice to meet you all  :)

Hi Bishop,
Neerim SOuth, Gippsland, just two km from where the famous Gippsland Blue is made, and down the road the yummy Jindi Brie. So far I've made a Caerphilly, 2 Swiss, a Gouda and a blue. Time will tell, but the experiment continues. Who do you use for your supplies?

Given this is a bit of an Aussie love in I thought I'd join the introductions. I'm in Central Victoria and have 1 failed and 1 successful feta, 1 stretchy mozzarella, and loads of cottage cheese (how else do you get rid of 5 litres of milk a day?) to my name. I use Green Living for my supplies.

Edith, try the maltese cheese,  It can be frozen once made, then used for pastizi's and ravioli.  Quick and easy to make too.

Hi All,
thought this might be a good opportunity to ask while there are so many Aussies in one place, I have been buying      un-homogenised milk from Coles for $2.50 a litre (the only un-homogenised variant they have).  I thought i would have a look around and went to a couple of Healthfood shops, they also sold the same product as Coles but also carried a 2nd brand for $3.20 per litre.  I was amazed to see that "bath milk" (raw milk, illegal to buy/sell for human consumption in Australia) obviously for people making soap  ::) ranged from $7- to $9- for 2lt Wow!

Does anyone know where to get reasonably priced milk in Vic?

I used to buy "bath milk" straight from a dairy for $1.00ltr to use for cheese making.  If usually means that it is neither homonogized or pasturised?  I though knew and trusted this dairy, so I also knew that the milk was healthy and clean
What your paying for store bought milk, is what I am paying here too.  Good luck in your search.

Bishop, I use green living mainly, but some things are cheaper on cheeselinks.
Today I made my first cheddar, and it's a long process, but looking really good. Tomorrow it's my first emmental.
I only make cheese when it rains!
In Gippsland it rains .
A lot!
