Title: Forum IT Questions - Finding Recipes, New Replies Button, Unread Posts Button etc
Post by: bmckee561 on November 22, 2010, 03:00:57 PM
I love the Forum, but find it difficult to locate individual recipes for a particular style or type of cheese.  Is there a way to only view "Recipe's" used by members.  Maybe it could be a sub section of each style or somthing like that.  I know there are recipes posted on the "CheeseForum.org" site, but they are limited and I am looking for several to compare and/or select.

I enjoy reading members posts about problems and experiences and learn from them and I would like to be able to use some of those situations in my own development in home cheese making.

Salute!   :D

Good question/issue.

I think all of us find it difficult to find any information on this forum, part of the reason is that by it's very nature, forums are very very chaotic (which drives me nuts). Many topics start with one subject and then change to a second and third and end on a fourth completely different topic, often in the wrong board. I think all of us including me are guilty of this. In my Admin role I often, normally once a thread has gone cold, rename the thread to match it's contents and move it the appropriate board, so that info is easier to find for our users. Also sometimes I split hijacked multi-subject threads but often there is no clean point to split.

The forum used to have a Recipes Board, but members almost always hijacked the threads into different topics, plus of course there are many different ways/recipes for the "same" cheese, thus after canvasing some of our more frequent members, I reorganized it to current different Cheese Type Boards.

For current recipe postings, some threads start with them, sometimes people post them in the middle of a thread. Often I rename a thread XXX Cheese Making Recipe and move it to the applicable board so that it is visually easier for users to find, but it's not perfect. Even the current Cheese Type Boards is not perfect as cheeses do not always easily sort into different types. Maybe I should have organized by country, but too late now.

FYI, one trick to finding specific cheese making recipes is to Search Advanced on key words, see the FAQ on Searching, another is to browse to that cheese's type board, then click on column heading "Subject"to sort alphabetically, then scroll to that cheese's name.

Agree, I should update the recipes on the website.

Lastly, I'd like to add more Boards to help subdivide subjects but I've been told several times that there are already too many. Also, when the forum was younger, I had people that wanted to post articles that people could reply to blog style so I though of installing some blog software on the parent website, but they never actually delivered them, maybe now with more members that would be useful.

Again good question/ideas, hope others will respond with their thoughts & ideas, John/Admin.

I appreciate the response to my OP.  Another point of interest would be to have a "New Post's" Since Last Visit Button that would allow members to view newly posted items since their last visit.  And another might be the ability to view a the post you have submitted without having to remember what they were.

Sorry if I seem a bit needy, but I use several other Forums (Wine and Beer) to stay up on my hobbies and they have adapted some of these functions to improve the operation of the overall forum.

I still think this is a great place to obtain good information and learn a new hobby.  Thanks again for the quick response.

Maybe I am not understanding what you're asking for, but these capabilities already exist. Have you looked at the top left of the screen under your name and above the date? Clicking on these will retrieve posts since your last visit.

Also, you can click on your id or another person's id and retrieve all that person's posts.

In the upper right hand corner there is an arrow ^. Click on it and the "Messages since last visit" menu and your avatar will show up. It's really light on the blue background.

Again thanks for the feedback.  I am learning slowly how to navigate this site.  I suppose it is the differences in appearance between the forums that I use that confuses me.  I did discover the "Show new replies to your posts" and that is a nice feature.  The "Show unread posts since last visit"  seems to work if you have viewed all the unread posts that existed previously.  I will check this out a bit further.

Anyway, I really appreciate the information updates everyone is providing.  I will get it all together soon.

Just to add, also to identify new posts, from the forum homepage, the large cheese wedges to the left of a Board are bright yellow if there is a new post since your last visit to that Board and if you are in a Board and if there is a new post in a thread then a bright orange clickable "new" button appears at the end of the thread subject name.

For others, in the FAQ Board there are several IT how to's.

steampwr8, good point on that small arrow at top right of forum screen that can be easily clicked. Also, on right of forum sections name there is a small clickable - or + button that can accidentally hide a section of the forum (I've had a few people PM me where did XXX go?!).

When I click on the "^" icon in the upper right corner, I shrink or expand the header, it does not do as steampwr8 indicated.  Am I missing something else?

I email topics to myself; then I can print or save the relevant parts for reference. I started doing that for things I want to remember as finding them again can be a challenge.
There's so much info here and the discussions naturally digress and morph so little pearls of wisdom are buried everywhere!
Maybe it would be a good idea to start a recipe thread where members could post their tried and true special recipes. Then it would only be one thread to comb through, even if it contained all categories of cheeses.

When you mouse click the top left arrow open you should see similar to below (with your Visible Name & Avatar) in which case you can click the text beside your name "Show unread posts since last visit." or "Show new replies to your posts.", when you toggle that top section off then you can no longer see your visible name and Avatar or that text beside it, see my screen shots below.

TOPIC RESET...How can we organize the recipe index by cheese types, especially those with recipes and detailed process instructions.

The Webmaster and hosts do a great job of pervuing each post and moving them to appropriate threads. Could this be done this way?

Steam - FYI, John is our webmaster and wonderful host. Just gave him a cheese for all of his hard work. Hadn't thought of it in a while, but we should all "cheese" him and often.

I just cheesed him, too.  He works very hard for all of us and originated one of the most helpful and friendliest forums I've ever found.

As with all forums when you are new, it can take some time to learn how to navigate around and find all that you want.  I really like the forum just as it is!

Works fine for me too. I do have a problem with the forum though...I let it consume me sometimes. I find it addicting...engaging...illuminating. Good stuff.

The wife was away this weekend so I cranked out my second Beaufort (hopefully better this time!) and my second Goutaler (Jarlsberg). My confidence is bolstered by the information and guidance from this forum.

For all you do, John, here's a cheese and a big THANKS.

Very cute picture Buck47/John, your son?

OK to bmckee561's & steampwr8's reminder on having a Cheese Making Recipe's area(s). As posted above, when we had this 2 years ago it rapidly evolved like many threads do into all sorts of topics and thus became not a Recipes Area but an everything area, thus it was merged into the cheese types which were enlarged to the number of Cheese Type Boards as we currently have.

To address this shortcoming of Forum software I have rebuilt the website (https://cheeseforum.org/forum/index.php/topic,5778.0.html) to member submitted Articles such as mature recipes and procedures including a set of multi-author Wiki Articles including popular cheese type recipes.

Hope this is better!

Thanks for the efforts in making changes.  I know it is time consuming and I do appreciate it.

Hope everyone had a Joyful Holiday (Christmas) and wishing all a "Happy New Year".
