Title: Cheese wax replacement?
Post by: zacuito on May 27, 2011, 02:41:41 PM
Hi,

I can't find any cheese wax in store, can i use candles wax instead? is it safe?
If yes can i add some recycled cheese wax with the melted candels to limit cracking?

Thanks a lot

Candle wax and cheese wax have different compositions and different melting points.  Don't use candle wax for your cheeses.

You can buy cheese wax at www.cheesemaking.com (http://www.cheesemaking.com) and a few other places as well.

Rosa is right.  Besides, it would take one hundred candles!!!

Also, Margaret Morris (Glengarry Cheese) says to use a cream wax first if you are
planning to age them any legnth of time.  I make Cheddars that are 3 to 6
pounds that are aged over a year, and it's worth the extra time and trouble.

The cream wax is also harder to get off when you open them, but they are
all beautiful and NO extra mold on them when you do.
