Title: Cheese Press Calculator
Post by: smolt1 on June 01, 2011, 02:18:55 PM
I have written a program to calculate lever press variables. The inputs are Units(lbs-inches), mechanical advantage and tare weight of press, mold dia or area, pressure or weight. The outputs are lever arm weight. I have emailed the zipped folder successfully by changing the .EXE file to .EXE1(most email won't let you email .EXE file). To use the calculator you have to unzip the folder and then rename the .EXE1 file to .EXE. Can anybody tell me how to upload the zipped folder to the CF so it can be downloaded to anyone who wants to use it.
Thanks

The latest version that will work on any browser can be found on Sturdypress.com    1-6-18

While I applaud the effort smolt1,  the "IT security guy" in me cringes at the thought of sharing a .exe file over the Internet.
That is way too risky for my blood.

I know that I, and others, have written some spreadsheets that calculate similar things, but could always use some improvements.

There is another way. The program is written in JUSTBASIC which is a free  downloadable programing language. I could transfer the .bas file which could then be run using JUSTBASIC, no EXE file. I have emailed the zipped folder to quite a few people with no problems. For the program to work it has to be unzipped and the EXE1 changed to EXE. The feedback I have received from people who don't want to do the math or don't know how to do the math has been all positive.

When something is zipped doesn't a .zip file extension get tacked on? That should travel okay. Winzip or Winrar do that, I believe.

I agree with Wayne. In this day and age of trojans, viruses, etc., any file with a .exe extension screams "I'm going to make you  >:D sorry  >:D you downloaded me!"

First is the calculator program worthwhile. Second is it safe to download and use. To answer the first question you have to see it working and think of who will be using it. To do that you could download the free programing language JUSTBASIC and I would email a .bas(a text file) file to run. Total time invested 5 minutes.
Is it safe? Receiving a text file that is a basic program to run in a commercial programing language  does not seem scary to me, I do it all the time.
If you did it this way there is NO .exe ( the scary file type)any where BUT it takes more effort than downloading the .EXE that is created by JUSTBASIC to send finished programs. SO if anybody would like the program send me your Email address and tell me if you want the .bas program file or the .exe executable file.

Those of us using a Mac can't use an .exe file...

I received one via email and have tested the file.  It will be an EXCELLENT tool for me to pass on to the people that take our "home cheesemaking" classes but don't want to worry about doing all the "techie" stuff.  They can just plug in their numbers and have the info they need right away.

I applaud you, smolt,  for the program!

Darius, The programing language JUSTBASIC is only for windows so it is not possible to put the Calculator on an Apple. I don't know if there is a BASIC programing language available for the Apple, but if there is it might be possible to adapt the .bas file which is text file of the program to the Apple version of BASIC.

Sue, thanks for the kind words.

If you can open an excel spreadsheed, you might look at this. I posted this a while back.
Probably not as nice as Smolt1's.  But I'm not a programmer..
You should see 3 tabs along the bottom. The middle tab "Simple lever press' is probably most relevant.
Good luck.

Here is the latest calculator with instructions written in Java. It should work on Windows and Apple.

I've updated this to include a page that will calculate protein to fat ratios.
