Can anybody tell me if this hdpe pipe would be safe to use for making cheese? It is used for water mains, so i assume that is a good sign.

Thanks guys,

Yes it may be used as such but take notice that its not chemical resistant so sanitizing with strong acid\base is not adviced.
HDPE is great stuff. Most good "Plastic" molds are made from this. It is a really inert material capable of withstanding pretty harsh cleaning products.
I recently got two stainless steel 8"wideX6"tall molds from www.ullmers-dairyequipment.com/ (http://www.ullmers-dairyequipment.com/)
for $25 ea.
I have not recieved them yet but they should be awsome.
steve5000, my understanding is that white PVC is commonly used for cold potable water distribution, and several members have made hoops out of it (there are some separate threads on whether it is good for cheese making), I have never heard of HDPE being used for water pipes as I thought it had poor tensile and thus burst strength to hold water mains pressure.
The city just replaced the old concerte mains with HDPE,very large diameter.
So i spoke to a guy today who said polypropylene pipe would be suitable for cheese hoops. Does anyone know about this? It is available from him only in grey color.
Anyone know if this pipe would be food safe?
Steve
