Title: Ultrasonic humidifer, helpful?
Post by: Tomer1 on November 16, 2011, 04:05:36 AM
I'm having a hard time controling the humidity levels in my (old school) wine fridge and my ripening boxes are running out.
Despite laying down a towel on the floor which is constantly moisten by the defrosting cycle I cant get it above 55%.  The whole trying to make do approach is not to my liking so I want to be proactive and work it out.

Getting the RH to 80-85% will make me much happier.
Will a cold mist humidifier do the trick?  Im looking on all sorts of machines sold as "medical devices" at pharmecies. most of them are fairly large looking with 5L container and offer 250 ml\hr of vapor.

Thanks,
Tomer.

Not sure about in the US but in hardware stores here in Australia you can buy cheap ultrasonic humidifiers designed as water features for creating a 'witch's cauldron' effect.  For $30 you can pick one up that will do the job in a small room with the added bonus that they come with coloured lights so the room looks a bit spooky when you open the door...

Found this a while back when I was thinking about curing meats.  He posts a link to a cheap untrasonic 'cold mist' huimidifier he uses.

Tomer1, I was using a small ultrasonic humidifier from Air-O-Swiss (http://www.airoswiss.net/) for a while. It was made specifically for humidifying a small cheese case or a cigar humidor. I had to move up to a larger humidifier due to the size of the caves I'm keeping, but it seemed to do the trick for a while! The type I was using was about the size of an electric pencil sharpener and used bottles of water. This is the model I used. (http://www.airoswiss.net/info/ultrasonics/7146.aspx)

Ive seen this kind of device on ebay, but with shipping from china its about 65-70$.
Id rather buy locally and get some kind of warranty in case it stops working after ... days.. months...

Yea, I love the Air-O-Swiss. I also use it in the bedroom. Curdbird where in BK are you?

Tomer, cheese and meat in the same cave, not a good idea. Been there, done that, not good.
