Title: Can you consumje cheese past its date?
Post by: ItsEssexRob on January 28, 2012, 12:12:41 PM
I finally got round to trying Brie De Meaux, but realised I had accidently bought one which runs out of date today.

Is it ok to eat it still today and tomorrow? Or is it more prone to harmful organisms?

Or does it actually age longer meaning its theoretically safer?

Thanks

Rob

No, I would go ahead and eat it. The date is only on there for a guide as required by local laws. It won't be any safer though if you age it longer at home- you  are referencing raw milk and the 60 day law(in the states) which is supposed to insure safety from pathogenic bacteria by aging the wheel for a minimum of 60 day. The thought is that the lactic environment of the cheese will by that time eliminate any pathogenic bacteria. That law is now under serious consideration by the government which wants to make it 90 days.

Yeah I agree completely with @Zenith1 - just go ahead and eat it! Often I have eaten cheese which have gone past there sell-by-date. They are as stated, rough guidelines required by law! A week or two give or take will be fine.

Enjoy your Brie De Meaux! :) Have a bottle of red as well.
