Title: Hello from Maine
Post by: Althea on February 28, 2012, 06:24:37 PM
I have a small licensed dairy with Jersey cows. Will be milking 9 cows by summer and legally sell raw milk, but dream of making cheese full time! :)

Welcome!

I'm new here too :).  How hard was it to build your dairy/get all the legal stuff in place?  I'm interested in doing that in the future (but with sheep) but it seems like so much cash outlay, you know?

Well I am very, very small scale. Milking just one cow at atime with a bucket milker but worked with our states dairy inspector to meet the code. It wasn't terribly expensive, but truth be told it isn't even really large enough scale for milking 6 cows let alone 9! I plan to expand next spring and if I were to do it again I would invest more money to plan for expansion from the start. But its a start and I love it!
