Hey!
Completely new to cheese making.
I'm interested in buying some basic equipment and learning the ropes of the cheese world.
Thank you.
Welcome Tribes great forum you'll enjoy it here.
Hi Tribes, I'm just up the road near Tetbury, I work in Bristol - but am moving to Canada very soon. Anyway, good luck with the cheese making and if you're looking for leads on where to buy stuff let me know what you're looking for and I can send you some links and contacts. Cheers
Hi heather s!
My Grandparents live in Tetbury, beautiful part of the country!
I am looking to buy a few basic items; do you have any for sale or know of decent places to get them from?
Cheers!
Hi Tribes!
Yes, Tetbury is a grand spot - we're sorely going to miss the area. I didn't exactly adore commuting into Bristol 4 days a week but there are worse commutes and worse spots than Bristol to be sure (nice spot, just always in a hurry to leave when you're living elsewhere - I'm down tomorrow for work, at the Watershed, but will make a day out of it and properly enjoy it).
As for supplies to start with - you'll likely find Ascott Supplies a good place - and they've moved up near here (and near your grandparents - so you could combine a visit and save on postage ;-). There's various sites you can order from on-line but Ascott sell starters and cheese making starter kits (for both soft and hard) plus moulds, pH sticks etc. - they have a decent selection and are pleasant and quick to respond on line, including to specific emails :-) You can compare prices with someone like Moorlands cheesemaking supplies (see on line). Once you get started and if you decide you wanted to explore less commonplace starters there's a cheese maker near Bath that sells a range of starters. I can pass on more links if you want.
There's tons of recipes and guidance on techniques on this forum. But I certainly found that it's taken me a huge amount of trawling, before finding this site, and still so when it comes to more localised stuff. An organisation over here that you might find helpful to be aware of is the Association for Specialist Cheesemakers (ASC). It's made up of commercial cheese makers, distributors, etc. Associate membership is cheap and I suspect it's good value (I've just joined so don't have access to the members' area of their website yet). They have an all member event coming up in Devon that I'm planning to attend.
Good luck and do keep me posted.
Cheers!
