The gauge is technically called a hygrometer, I built an info page on them here. Expensive is a relative term and depends where you live. I got mine here in US off of Amazon.com, another member here, DaggerDoggie bought a simpler one in WalMart for USD5! If you use the forum's search bar you should see some other people's info on them.
